Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a long-term condition known for causing the individual to experience generalised pain all over the body.

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is thought to be related to the body’s processing of pain messages around the body, linked to the nervous system.

Anyone can develop fibromyalgia, although it affects around 7 times as many women as men and it typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50. It is not clear exactly how many people are affected by Fibromyalgia because it is very difficult to diagnose as there is no specific testing procedure, and symptoms are varied and unique to an individual. Some studies have suggested that as many as 1 in 20 people may be affected by Fibromyalgia.

Although there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, management techniques and practices are available to ease the symptoms of Fibromyalgia and reduce chronic pain. The aim of any Fibromyalgia intervention is to reduce pain and fatigue and will include a range of different therapies, exercises, and management techniques specific to the individuals unique presenting symptoms.

Features

For the employer

Our specialist interventions are designed to provide rehabilitation approaches that can help manage individual and specific chronic health conditions and aide rehabilitation. These fast-track solutions aim to support the individual with a focussed programme of activities, guidance and advice tailored to their needs, and to help them develop strategies to enable a return to work, or achieve sustained activity and attendance at work.

For the manager

We can provide guidance around suitability for the programme through a conversation with a member of our team. Our programmes are targeted at reducing short and long-term absence as a consequence of unpredictable flare-ups. Our experts can provide an outcome report if requested.

For the employee

All of our rehabilitation programmes are bespoke for the individual and their condition and symptoms, therefore participants would not be considered for a referral into the service unless they are able to commit and engage with the full programme. The Fibromyalgia Management Programme provides targeted advice and guidance focussed on the specific issues, symptoms and challenges experienced in order to reduce pain, manage symptoms and enhance overall quality of life.

The Physio Solutions Fibromyalgia Management Programmes are tailormade around the individual experience of symptoms, activity, and functionality.

Each individual programme is unique and is based on clinical best-practice and the individuals’ specific requirements and needs. Following the assessment, a decision is made regarding the specific support and therapy required and a programme is created with input from specialists and experts across a wide multidisciplinary team.

A flexible suite of options is available and can be delivered either 1-2-1 remotely or in group settings where appropriate, depending on the complexity of the case and the activities involved. We deliver a quality, evidence based service and robust clinical measures are used to monitor participant interaction and improvements in function, symptoms, and lifestyle.

Fibromyalgia Management Programme FAQs

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is thought to be the result of chemical reactions in the brain that alter the way the nerves relay and the brain process pain messages in the body. It can be triggered by physical or emotional trauma.
Fibromyalgia cannot be cured, but some of the symptoms and impact of the condition can be managed and are often eased by improving fitness and physical function with exercise and healthy eating. Additional treatment may include prescribed medication to help to reduce pain, mental health support, sleep hygiene support and maybe even anti-seizure medication.
Our fibromyalgia treatment programmes are tailormade for each participant, dependent upon their experience, symptoms, and limitations. All programmes are person-centred and include relaxation techniques, pacing, exercise/activity guidance and integration and lifestyle support such as sleep hygiene and nutrition.
